The Company Kool-Aide
I've been talking to my dad about a discussion that took place last night on KDKA with McClatchey, Littlefield, and a group of Pittsburgh sportswriters. McClatchey and Littlefield fed the public more of the same crap, according to my dad. That they're trying to build for the future and we're just not there yet. That we're going to lock these young guys up long term. That Lloyd McClendon has done nothing to show that he's not a good manager. That Bobby Hill isn't a long term solution anywhere. I don't buy a word of it. We already tried signing for the future. We inked Kendall, Benson, and Giles to long term deals. We couldn't afford to pay any of them in the long run, and we traded them all away. This is more of the same. Like I said yesterday, the team essentially is the same team as it was in 2003 and 2001 and 1999. The ownership isn't going to change a thing so long as they keep making money, and as disgusted as us Pirates fans get, things aren't going to change any time soon. I think the only way things change this year is if the Pirates are so historically bad that they're only drawing 8,000 people a night. Judging by the fact that attendance didn't crack 25,000 for fireworks night or Honus Wagner Statue night (which were slightly nicer than the Jason Bay Bobbleheads, but still an embarassment when compared to the Roberto and Maz bobbleheads from the old days) early in the season when hope should be high, things might be all Steelers all the time in Pittsburgh by June.
