Game 115: Pirates 2 Phillies 0

Where did these Pirates come from? After Jeff Karstens' near perfect game on Wednesday, Paul Maholm, Sean Burnett, Denny Bautista, John Grabow, TJ Beam, and Craig Hansen combined on a 12 inning six-hitter against the Phillies potent offense, finally taking home the win when Steve Pearce doubled in Ryan Doumit and later scored on Freddy Sanchez's single. It's not surprising to see Maholm have another outstanding outing (7 innings, five hits, 10 Ks, 3 walks), but the tip-toe job done by the bullpen, especially the later guys (Beam and Hansen walked five guys in three innings, though two were intentional walks by Beam), was pretty unexpected. If you're wondering, the Pirates allowed a run in the eighth inning on Tuesday and the D'Backs didn't bat after that, so the scoreless streak is exactly as long as Karstens, Maholm, and this passel of relievers have made it: 21 innings.
