Pirates 6 Cubs 5

Hold on to your butts for this one, the Pittsburgh Pirates are not in last place. I'm not really sure when this was the case last, probably sometime last July. We did it in the most fitting manner possible, with Ryan Dempster throwing a wild pitch to let the go ahead run cross the plate in the top of the ninth inning, then Salomon Torres put two guys on before closing out the save. Most of the fireworks before then came from Jason Bay, who tonight was to Juan Mateo was Albert Pujols is to Ian Snell. Bay hit two homers, the second of which was a monster two run shot in the bottom of the third that caused Mateo to throw his hands up in frustration. That gave us a 5-1 lead, which would not be enough given that we are the Pirates and Victor Santos was our starter tonight. He and Marty McLeary combined to blow the lead and tie the game up before (breath) Marte, Sharpless, Grabow and Torres shut the Cubbies down setting the stage for the semi-dramatic finish. Tomorrow they face off one more time as we try and build a nearly insurmountable 1.5 game lead on the sixth place Cubbies.
