Ahhh spring is here

Well, it's official. Baseball season is now upon us, commencing with the Pirates yearly beating of the Manatee County Community College Manatees Lancers. The most notable point of the game came when I checked the scoreboard from the computer lab on the chem floor and ESPN had the score switched, causing my heart to nearly jump out of my chest. The Pirates whomped on the poor college kids 8-1, with Oliver Perez throwing 2 innings with 3 Ks and 15 strikes on 19 pitches. The Pirates.com report linked above didn't have a description of his velocity, but Perez said he felt good and it's pretty rare to see him throw that many strikes, so I'll take it as a good sign. We're only going to see about half of the guys that played today, so Perez was really the one of most interest, at least to me. Tomorrow marks the first game of the spring against a real team, against the Nats or whatever the hell they're called now. RV will get the ball tomorrow while the rest of us cross our fingers and hope the Spring 2004 Ryan Vogelsong comes back from wherever he's been since... well, Spring 2004.

In ex-Pirate news, Dave Williams got shelled by Kia Tigers of Korea yesterday in his Reds debut, and the Eric Milton comparisions can't be far behind. I dunno, it's gotta be the uniforms or something.
